History
The cemetery is the oldest surviving necropolis of Toruń. It was founded in February 1811 (the first burials since June of the same year). The history of the cemetery dates back to the 14th century, when it was near the suburban church of Saint. Jerzy and the leprosarium were designated the place of burials. Old cemetery of St. George was liquidated in 1813 creating a new burial place nearby, enlarged several times (including in 1826, 1854, 1856, 1890), currently occupies approx. 8 ha, divided into 28 lodgings. Currently, individual parts are administered by the following parishes: the Evangelical-Augsburg parish Szczepana, the cathedral of Saints Janów and the parish of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary. It is also used by Orthodox and people of other religions. Despite the significant age of the cemetery, there are rather few examples of the old tombstone sculpture, the oldest - at the same time the most interesting is the tombstone of neoclassical forms issued in 1826 to Johan Ephraim Wessel, who died nine years earlier. Also from the first half of the nineteenth century, there are two more tombstones: Amalia Hirsch from 1844 and Captain Żernicki from 1839. Tombstones from the late nineteenth century are relatively few, the vast majority come from the twentieth century. There are no monuments of an interesting form among them. Some of them require urgent renovation, such as the Modernist gravestone of the Raapke industrialist family. The beauty of the oldest parts of the necropolis is emphasized by lush old greenery and decorative metal fences of graves. Following the example of the most valuable Polish necropolis, also at the cemetery of Saint. Jerzego - on the occasion of the feasts connected with the feast of All Saints - there is an annual issue dedicated to the renovation of the most valuable tomb monuments. The wooden cemetery chapel from 1885 now serves as a church of the Polish Catholic parish. The gravedigger's house was built in 1913. Along along ul. Morcinka was set in the form of a lapidarium - a series of mostly damaged ones - tombstones from the old-Polish cemetery located in ul. Matejki (currently the area of Osiedle Młodych). columbaria
In Toruń, apart from the traditional graves on two cemeteries (Central Municipal Cemetery and St. George), a columbaria was established in which urns are built with ashes of the deceased. Since the construction of the incinerator in the city (2013), this form of burial has become more and more popular. [source: Wikipedia, 121169]
