History
The cemetery was dedicated by priest Kazimierz Kaszelewski in 1908; however, the decision about its location was made in February 1904 at the municipal council meeting. In 1906, 19 landowners were expropriated. Because the cemetery was too small, already in 1925 it was enlarged by a plot bought from Józef Gąsienica Bystrzana, and then it was constantly enlarged until 1986. Thanks to the efforts of priest Jan Tobolak in 1924 a brick chapel was built in the cemetery. Probably the first buried in the cemetery was a merchant - Józef Fabian Słowik (December 31, 1907). In its more than a century of history, the cemetery has often gathered thousands of thousands of people. It happened on August 17, 1910 at the funeral of Klimek Bachleda (present were, inter alia, Henryk Sienkiewicz, Count Władysław Zamoyski). In December 1924 the tragically deceased old guide Jan Gąsienica Daniel was buried there. In May 1926, Zakopane left Bartłomiej Obrochta. In 1929, these were the Tatra funerals. First, the climber Mieczysław Świerz was buried, and after a few months Lida and Marzena Skotnicówna. In 1932 Stanisław Krzeptowski was said goodbye. During the occupation, the cemetery became a place of numerous executions carried out by the Nazis. In the cemetery there is a quarters of soldiers killed during the First World War, this is the Austrian War Cemetery No. 378 - Zakopane, it is part of the XIII quarters. A dozen or so fallen soldiers from the 1st, 2nd and 3rd brigades of Polish Legions from Podhale were buried there. Also the legionnaires who died in the post-war period were buried there. The ashes of General Andrzej Galica, Marian Januszajtis, Mieczysław Boruta-Spiechowicz were moved to this cemetery and Kazimierz Sosnkowski has a symbolic grave. On October 24, 1981, a monument commemorating the creators of Polish scouts was unveiled on the grave of Olga Małkowska. [source: Wikipedia, 453332]
