History

The cemetery was founded as a rural cemetery for the residents of Wawrzyszewo and later Chomiczówka. It covers an area of 6.5 ha and has a shape similar to a trapezium. It was doubled. The oldest grave comes from 1830 - it is the grave of Konstantin Brzozowski, a staff billionaire from the 2nd battalion of sappers who died in the village of Wawrzyszew on December 8, 1830. There is also the grave of Barbara from Chomiczów Jahołkowska in the cemetery - the name Chomiczówka comes from her family name. The next group of graves are a few pre-war tombstones, and a military headquarters - 500 soldiers of the 30th Kaniow Rifle Regiment killed in the northern rubric of Warsaw in 1939, buried with the commander, Major Bronisław Kamiński. Next to the grave of soldiers in September 1939, there are graves of soldiers of the Warsaw Uprising and graves of civilians shot in Wawrzyszewo in 1939. The greater part of the cemetery are post-war graves. When the Powązkowski cemetery was full, burials of residents from other parts of the city were held there. Currently, this cemetery is also full. The role of the cemetery chapel is played on the other side of ul. Wólczyńska St. Mary Magdalene. In the vestibule of the temple there are several epitaphs from the turn of the 19th and 20th centuries - including heirs of Powązek Antonina and Józef from Werbna Łaszczyńskich.
