New Jewish cemetery - a Jewish cemetery at 55 Miodowa Street, in the area of Krakow's Grzegórzki. The cemetery was founded in 1800 on the land bought by the Jewish commune from the Augustians. In 1836, the cemetery area was enlarged with a further piece purchased from monks. During World War II, the cemetery was closed, and the most valuable monuments were sold by the Germans to stonemasons. After the war, Eng. Stending found many gravestones in Płaszów and put them back in the cemetery. In 1957, the site was cleaned up from the Joint Distribution Committee. On March 24, 1999, the cemetery and pre-burial house from 1903 were entered in the register of monuments. The cemetery has an area of approx. 4.5 ha, has a brick pre-funeral hall, a lapidarium, a monument and 10,000 tombstones (the oldest from 1809). There are many plates in the cemetery commemorating the deaths of Jews killed during World War II. [source: Wikipedia, 503272]
